Salt of the Earth

When you age a fine wine, you age it in wood, a material that comes from the earth. If you try to create a fine wine in a cask of silver or gold, it becomes sour.

Similarly, when we raise our children we need to give them the values of the earth. What do I mean by the values of the earth? What I mean is that we need to give them the value of commonality of humanity, the value of people, and the ability to grow and share with one another.

If we only give them the value of things that can be bought with money, then unfortunately it is like we are putting fine wine in a silver or gold cup. The wine spoils and the children grow up without the ability to appreciate the simple things in life, like the beauty of a sunrise.

Children are busy with the values they have been given, so we need to make sure we are giving our children the values of the earth, the simple values that will nourish them to become good people who are like the “salt of the earth.”
