These prayers and meditations help us connect with a high level of consciousness, known in Aramaic as Slicha (forgiveness) during the month of Virgo and the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Reciting these prayers cleanses our past negative actions whether from this life times or previous ones. According to Rav Isaac Luria (The Ari), Slichot should be recited after midnight, as the aspect of mercy is awakened in the universe from midnight until dawn each day.
