The Zohar tells us that the first day of Tishrei, or Libra, is Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the new year. We don’t want this upcoming year to be another version of the year we just finished; we want it to be even greater than the year before, greater than any year we’ve ever had. In this month, and especially in the first two days of this month (Rosh Hashanah), we want to draw not just more Light, not just greater Light, but Light that will transform every aspect of our lives, both spiritually and physically.
Without consciousness and awareness on our part, the Light of the Creator cannot manifest. One level of consciousness that we need to keep in mind as we’re making our connections this month is the consciousness of poverty. Every single one of us is destined for greatness, but because we settle for less – physically and spiritually - we don’t achieve our destiny. But in the month of Tishrei we cannot settle. We don’t want this to be a year in which we receive anything less than what we are truly destined to have. Therefore, we have to begin this month with a mindset of poverty, with the understanding that we have nothing… and then we have to want everything.
Kabbalists tell us that every year that is poor in the beginning is wealthy at the end. And so as we come to the beginning of the year in Tishrei, we need to create a consciousness of having nothing and wanting everything. In fact, nothing remains of the previous year, and since we start with nothing, we need to ask for everything – health, sustenance, blessings, and complete fulfillment.
A year that begins with the consciousness of poverty can end with both physical and spiritual wealth. We want to achieve the greatness for which we came to this world, and no longer settle for what we have - either in the physical and spiritual sense - nor be satisfied with what we have. We come into this month of Tishrei knowing that we have nothing and that we are not settling for anything that we have had until now. We want everything new, and we want everything greater than before.
By incorporating this consciousness throughout the month of Tishrei, we will be able to truly draw into our lives the year that we want; a year filled with blessings, fulfillment, and endless Light.
