Our time on Earth is so precious and limited, yet so easy to take for granted. Every day, we expect that there will be another day tomorrow and another after that, so we give less importance to today. In truth, each day has a powerful spark of Light that we are meant to reveal if we understand how.
Here are 4 tips to make each day count:
1. Make time to pause for reflection. Our lives are busy. Between jobs and errands and social engagements, it can be hard to find time to slow down and self-reflect. When we do have downtime, we tend to fill it with social media, TV, and other distractions. It can feel like if we aren’t busy every moment of the day that we aren’t working hard enough or that we aren’t managing our time correctly.
In truth, it is so important for our spiritual work that we have time for contemplation. Ask yourself: what am I spending my time and energy on? Is it meaningful and purposeful, or am I just so busy “doing”? Make time to meditate, sit and think, and spend some time with yourself. No matter how hectic your life is, there are always a few minutes to be found if you make it a priority.
2. Know that you can restart your day at any moment. We’ve all had days we wish we could just skip. Everything seems to be going wrong. We think, “Today was supposed to be such a good day. I can’t wait until this day is over.”
Instead of writing off a bad day, know that you have the ability to restart the day at any moment. You have the power to choose to start over, even if it’s at the end of the day. By telling your brain that you aren’t going to give energy to something, you can order it to move on to the next thing. Don’t waste the day dwelling in negativity – every moment counts! Reframe your thinking and start fresh.
3. The more you share with others, the more energy you receive. Everything has an energy, including every day. When we act selfishly, we actually drain the energy of the day. But when we share with others, we put energy back into the day. This energy does not die at the end of the day but continues to live on and fuel us.
You can either deplete the day of its energy or revitalize it simply by the way you treat others. The more you give, the more you receive, and the more you are supported in the days to come.
4. Today’s spiritual work can only be done today. The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches that we are each given the exact number of days to live that we need in order to complete our spiritual work. Each day has its own unique work related to a specific aspect of our soul that needs elevation. The spiritual work we are meant to do today can’t be done any other day. If we don’t devote our time and energy to it, it will pass us by.
If you think about each day this way, you realize that your job today is too important to be distracted by possible upset or drama. Every moment in your life is a gift that will never come again - so make it count!
For a toddler, every day, there’s something new and exciting to discover and learn. What if we approached our lives that way? Each day is a unique, one-of-a-kind experience. Make today a priority and seize the opportunities that exist!
