Rav Berg expounds on the opening words of the portion, Vayechi Yaakov b'eretz Mitzrayim ("And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt"), explaining that Egypt is simply a code word for the negativity associated with the Desire to Receive for the Self Alone—as well as the place where Jacob the Patriarch and Moshe achieved high levels of consciousness. According to the Zohar, we must experience both negativity and positivity alike in this world in order to transform the negativity, achieve the level of consciousness that Jacob the Patriarch did, and truly live.
